- More info:When an A/C compressor stops working it is most often due to a faulty A/C clutch. Test the A/C clutch by putting 12 volts on the electrical input of the A/C compressor when engine is switched off. If you hear a click sound the clutch is working. If the A/C clutch is faulty there will be no sound at all. Replacing the clutch alone is relatively easy and considerably cheaper than replacing the entire compressor.
