Simons® Sportsystem are constructed to be durable under normal and higher stress driving conditions. Pipe work and silencer walls are made of extra strong and tough material, with extra support provided at critical points throughout the exhaust system. Stainless steel packing is used, where needed, to prevent silencer burnout. Aluminised material, chrome steel and stainless steel are used to counteract corrosion. Tailpipes are always made of polished stainless steel (304).

All part numbers denoted “Top Quality” are made of chromium stainless steel (AISI 409), except flanges. Clamps and other fitting parts may also not be made from stainless.

All part numbers denoted “SS Quality”, have exterior surfaces made from stainless steel (304), except flanges. Clamps and other fitting parts may also not be made from stainless steel.

SS Quality - Stainless

Simons Sportsystems in SS Quality are manufactured using predominantly stainless steel (AISI 304). To minimize the risk of cracking, inner parts are made of chrome steel (see TOP Quality), which has a higher tensile strength than stainless steel. Flanges and certain mounting parts may not be made of stainless steel. Technically speaking, AISI 304 is an austenitic stainless steel. The steel is alloyed using around 18% chromium and 8% nickel. To guarantee the best quality for welding, we only use steel with extra low carbon content. As opposed to pure chromium steel, this material is more resistant to discoloration and corrosion for a longer period of time. However, this is not true for surfaces that are welded, highly modified and/or exposed to high heat. All surfaces that are exposed to high heat will take on yellow/brown tinge or hue. This process starts at around 200 degrees Celsius. To keep the tail pipes from becoming yellow we use inserts to avoid discolouration of the outer surface. The outer surfaces of the silencers, in most cases, tend not to be exposed to very high heat, and can therefore be kept “clean” for several years. Products using SS Quality are not painted. The tailpipes are always made from polished, stainless steel. The estimated lifetime for a SS Quality product is 10-20 years.

TOP Quality - Chrome steel
Simons Sportsystems in Top Quality are made from chrome steel (AISI 409) From a technical point of view this material is a ferritic stainless steel. This steel is alloyed with 10-12% chromium. In order to guarantee high quality welding, the level of carbon is reduced to a very low level. Some titanium is also added to the alloy. This results in tough steel with very good welding characteristics and good resistance to surface corrosion. This quality of steel was brought onto the market during the 1980s to meet demand from car manufacturers who needed a good quality steel with a life of 8-10 years. Over many years, this quality of stainless steel will develop a discoloured surface especially those becoming very hot. Rear silencers in each kit are normally painted. The tailpipes are always made from polished stainless steel. The estimated lifetime for a TOP Quality product is 10-20 years.

ALU Quality - Aluminised steel
Simons Sportsystems in ALU Quality is made of aluminised steel. This is mild steel covered with a layer of aluminium. At Simons, we also use material with extra thickness. This combination results in a product with a fairly long lifetime in a cost efficient way. Simons systems made in ALU quality steel are also painted, where parts are exposed. The tailpipes are always made from polished stainless steel. The estimated lifetime for a ALU Quality product is 3-6 years although this varies according to engine characteristics, usage and road conditions.
